L Lawliet

The Basics

Character: L Lawliet (AU)
Series/Fandom: Death Note
Original or Alternate: AU
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Sexuality:
Isn't quite sure.

Appearance:
5'8 standing normally, and 5'6 while slouching.
He is extremely pale and skinny, and quite underweight at 110bs.

His eyes are coal black, but they do have emotion in them a lot of the time. He can hide them well, being an L and all, but it's there. His hair is black, slightly darker than his eyes, and it's lacking style, unless you consider "just-rolled-out-of-bed" a style. He's got dark, dark circles under his eyes, the product of staying awake for days on end, but he doesn't seem to care much. The only other distinguishing feature about him are his hands. They're long, thin, and very pale, very flexible and nimble.

He also wears a plain white, large, long-sleeved shirt and baggy jeans that hang off of his waist. As is the case with other Ls, he doesn't wear socks or shoes, either.

Personality

L is a mystery to most. He hardly ever shows his face to the public, almost always communicates through computers and voice changers. Almost nobody in the world has ever seen his face. As a result, L is a secluded young man who prefers to not have anything to do with other people, as a general rule. At first sight, he looks like a sloppy, unrefined oddball, and though his is a bit of the latter, he’s far from sloppy or unrefined. He’s actually quite the neat freak, and he’s very polite, though it’s simply that and nothing more. He isn’t really looking for friends. L is calm, somewhat quiet, but he has a commanding voice, one that people listen to when he does speak. He’s always thinking, always calculating and analyzing things.

Though he is calm and collected, it doesn’t mean he’s a heartless bastard. Of course, he can be that way, but only if he really, really dislikes you. He is compassionate in his own way, and will most likely lend a helping hand where it’s needed, provided that it’s relevant to his interests. He’s got a sense of chivalry, and he’ll almost always help a woman in need. Of course, while he may be willing to help, he’s not entirely selfless. L isn’t on anybody’s side. He’s on his own. Most times, he’ll do things until he grows tired of them and loses interest, with the exception of when it’s for someone he cares for greatly. There aren’t many people he cares for greatly, to be honest, maybe two people he’s known in his lifetime, and so the possibility isn’t strong.

Though he doesn’t necessarily like people, it doesn’t mean he’s completely unapproachable. He just needs to find the right person, one who can put up with his blunt and sometimes offending choice of words. His social skills, really, resemble that of a socially-stunted hedgehog. Most of the time, if he’s going to talk to somebody, they have to approach him first. He’s not shy, just generally avoids people. It’s the problem that comes with living alone for most of his life.

History

Wammy’s House is known to produce refined genius children, and L is no exception. Though not much is known about how he got there, L lived at Wammy’s House until he was eighteen years old. As he grew older, more and more children were added to the house. A, B, Matt, Mello, Near—L didn’t know A well before he died and he was a little disturbed by B, who took it on himself to become L’s perfect double. Matt, Mello, and Near came around the time that L was the busiest, and so he never spoke much to them, or even let them see him. They knew he was there, but they did not know who he really was.

Eventually though, L left Wammy’s. He took Watari, the elderly man who had created Wammy’s, with him, and they moved from hotel to hotel over the years, solving cases and working their way up the ladder. And then, he got involved in the Kira case.

The task force, consisting of Matsuda, Chief Yagami, Aizawa, Ide, Ukita, and Mogi, were quite the impressive team. L found that he enjoyed working with them, and through the use of their skills and his deductive reasoning, eventually decided that Light Yagami was his predominant suspect. Chief Yagami was not pleased with this, but trusted L to run a thorough investigation. L decided to go to To-Oh University, the same university that Light was going to, in order to get to know him better. He met Light as Ryuuga Hideki, using the fake name so that he would not be in danger of being killed by Kira. After a few tests and loaded questions, L asked Light to join the task force. Light agreed, and so the investigation began.

One day, Light asked to be kept imprisoned, so that L could figure out if Light was Kira or not. L agreed, though he was suspicious of Light’s motives. The killings stopped when Light was put into his cell, and just as L was about to declare that Light was Kira, they started up again. L was angry, at this. He disliked not knowing what was going on, and he was suspicious of the sudden innocent glint in Light’s eyes. But L could no longer hold Light captive—this way, at least. He let Light out of the prison cell, and instead chained him to his wrist to keep an eye on him. This was the one biggest mistake in L’s life, though he did not realize it until much, much later.

Throughout the time that L was in handcuffs with Light, it was frustrating. There were no leads, and the task force was going nowhere. L’s prime suspect was seemingly innocent, and they were stuck. That is, until they found a link to Kira through the Yotsuba corporation. Finally, they had found who seemed to be the third Kira. The task force went into action, ended up in a full chase after him, eventually capturing him and having him in custody. Unfortunately, he fell victim to a heart attack. When they found the object that did it to him, the Death Note, Light took it, and immediately was different, back to his old personality before the handcuffs went on. It was a subtle change, enough so that the rest of the team couldn’t see it, but L knew. And somehow, L also knew that he was coming closer to death every day.

There were rules for this Death Note. One, saying the user of the Death Note had to write a name in it every thirteen days or they would die, completely disproved the fact that Light was Kira. However, L still could not let go of the idea that Light was Kira. It would solve the case entirely, completely. So, in order to test his theory, L had finally figured out a way to solve the case. He was going to test the Death Note using a criminal sentenced to die in thirteen days. If he could just pull this off, he’d be able to finish Kira once and for all. But just as he announced this to the team, Watari hit the data deletion button, just as L had instructed him to do. Still, L tried to remain calm, and told the rest of the team what was going on. However, in the middle of his explanation, a jolt of pain pierced him straight through the heart. And as he was falling, all he really wanted was to know if Light had done it.

But then-- nothing.
